Marshfield Village Walkability

Marshfield, VT

Marshfield, located in Washington County, is bisected by the Winooski River. Evolving from a self-sufficient agricultural and small manufacturing community, today Marshfield is a small, rural community with many residents who commute to larger towns for work. Although snowmobiling, hunting, hiking, biking, and horseback riding are attractive recreational activities, given the rurality of the community, it is more car-centric requiring residents to spend more time in their cars to travel to everyday destinations. The community landscape does not currently support infrastructure that will allow residents who are unable to drive to walk and roll safely to community amenities. The truck route on Route 2 is of specific concern in that this high-speed thoroughfare has limited consideration for transitional speeds and active modes of transportation.

Project Goals Statement:

Improve walkability and visibility of Marshfield Village

Partner Organization:
Marshville Village
Marshfield Planning Commission
Lamoille County Planning Commission
Wolcott Planning Commission

Technical Assistance:

  • Outreach and Engagement Resources
  • Marketing and Communication Resources
  • Fundraising and Grant Support and Resources

Technical Assistance Outcome:

In the fall of 2023, the technical assistance team conducted a walkabaility training and audit for the Village of Marshfield. The events brought together partners from local regional planning commissions, volunteers, and staff from diverse backgrounds and levels of ability. Using the AARP Walk Audit Toolkit, assessed 4 connections and assets where they identified challenges in walking and rolling safely between destinations. The post-audit report provided recommendations including sidewalks, signage, crosswalks, landscaping, streetscaping, and art instillation and tactile urbanism projects. Recommendations were compiled into conceptual plan renderings which were shared with the regional planning commission for consideration in future project improvement plans.
